The legendary WRX and STI came to the US and Canadian market in 2002, with a simple recipe of all-wheel drive, and a turbocharged boxer motor in a small reasonably priced four-door making 227 hp. This was offered in a sedan referred to as the GD chassis, while wagon was referred to as the GG chassis.

In 2004, the STI was finally available for the North American market.
Debuting with a 300 hp, turbocharged boxer motor, with a six-speed manual and more go fast goodies. 

2008 debuted a hatchback, referred to as the GH chassis, while the STI with a widebody was referred to as the GR chassis, alongside the sedan body style WRX GE chassis and GV, widebody sedan.

In 2015, Subaru went back to a sedan-only offering in North America, referred to as the VA chassis came with a 268 hp from the new FA20 motor, while the STI retained the EJ motor making over 300 hp. The STI was discontinued in 2021.

    Piston forging developed by Crawford Performance. Although the forging style is available to the public, our skirt length and dish design is exclusive to Crawford Performance. This forging upgrade features:

    • 100% CNC machined from high quality 2618-T6 wrought aluminum bar stock
    • Specifically designed for high horsepower road and drag race engines
    • Internal and external bracing (bridge-like design) provides a more rigid construction while minimizing overall weight
    • Billet means pistons are machined on every surface allowing for all unnecessary weight to be removed during manufacturing, reducing excess friction/heat from high horsepower applications
    • Weight reduction of up to 32 grams
    • Includes high quality 9310 steel wrist pins
    • Reduced skirt width and shorter wrist pin when compared to traditional “full round” style forgings. The narrow skirt helps minimize piston contact with the cylinder wall that can cause friction and power loss while the shortened wrist pins reduces the overall weight.

    Through many years of trial and error, we have honed in on the essentials that are a MUST to replace when installing a new short block in your Subaru. Most of these items are genuine OEM Subaru parts, as these are the most reliable and proven parts that you can get.

    Do you have an EJ20?
    The EJ20 engine is the most difficult to successfully make big power with, and also one of the least reliable engines Subaru has manufactured. For this reason, we build all of our EJ20’s as a hybrid setup: Using the EJ20 cylinder heads on an EJ25 short block/crankcase. The two are compatible using special thicker gaskets, with no modifications needed to the heads themselves. This setup allows you to make big power reliably. Check out our EJ20/EJ25 Hybrid Short Back Installation Kit for all components needed to make this setup work.
